Performing Music

Music and Composition Series

Creative Songwriting
Students will learn the basics of popular songwriting techniques, how to write catchy melodies, understanding basic chord progressions, lyrical writing techniques. There will be potential opportunities for song showcases for selected songs.

Music Arranger
SStudents will learn how to creatively arrange music to either set musical pieces or original compositions. They will be taught the basics of music theory, chord theory, instrumentation characteristics and placement in a song and music scoring essentials

Music Lyricist
Students will learn the basics of writing musical lyrics, song structures, rhyming patterns, metrical patterns, use of symbols and metaphors and how to expand their word vocabulary. The medium of language is either English or Chinese. In the process, students will also learn how to integrate language use, poetry and music.

Instrumental Series

Musical Keys
Students will learn the basics of playing the keyboard through family of chords, basic chord theory, keyboard fingering and scales, which will quickly enable them to grasp the essence of playing popular music. A fun and enjoyable experience with an emphasis on quick playability.

Pop Guitar
Students will learn the basics of playing the guitar through family of chords, basic chord theory, keyboard fingering and scales, which will quickly enable them to grasp the essence of playing popular music. A fun and enjoyable experience with an emphasis on quick playability.

Rhythm And Beats/Stomp It! (NAC – AEP)
Students in this course will learn how to create a variety of musical rhythmic patterns using hand percussion instruments such as congas, bongos, cowbells, etc. in a group setting. They will also be taught to experiment with novel and creative ways to create beats and rhythms using everyday items such as pots and pans, bins, etc.

Rhythm Advantage! (Stomp It! With Sports)
This unique course is specially designed to fuse sports with music and promotes inter-disciplinary learning. The music component exposes students to the basics of musical beats and rhythmic patterns while the sports component teaches students psychomotor coordination and the importance of working together in a team to produce a concerted effort.


Vocal Performance Series

Voice Metamorphosis
Students will be exposed to the fundamentals of proper vocal techniques in popular music. They will learn correct breathing techniques and exercises, correct pitching and rhythmic sense, and be able to sing contemporary pop songs. Training for both solo singing and group singing will be provided. For group singing, vocal harmonization will be taught so that different voices can blend well together. Opportunities for showcases at the end of the course will be provided.

Vocal Beatboxing!
This unique course teaches students how to use their vocal chords to produce all kinds of sounds and sound effects (eg. Drum beats, percussion instruments, turn-table sounds, special effects) in order to form a one-man vocal band or group ensemble. The use of extreme vowel and consonant sounds, coupled with rhythmic patterns, will be taught. Opportunities for showcases at the end of the course will be provided.

One Voice!
This course aims to use community and group voices to forge strong community bonding through the group learning of cheers, chants, traditional songs, acapella singing. The result is creating a greater sense of place and ownership in the community that the students are in. The group will develop strong bonds through group singing and cheering and can potentially become the school’s cheer mascot and identity in school’s showcases, sports events and SYF competitions.


Music And Academic Series

Lyrical Expressions!
This course uses suitable lyrics in pop songs to promote the appreciation and love of English/Chinese language. Using rhymes, metrical patterns, use of metaphors, word repertoire, lyrics are a powerful medium of learning for all students who wish to improve their English/Chinese language proficiency.

Musicmatical!
This course uses music as a medium to teach mathematical concepts such as fractions, divisions, additions, consecutive numbers, proportions, ratios and exponential relationships. The basics of musical notation and music theory will first be introduced, followed by musical examples and musical exercises to bring out mathematical relationships.


General Music Series

General Music Appreciation
This course aims to expose students to the wonderful world of music, the different types and sounds of musical instruments, how different musical styles have different effects on people and the different ways to learn music.

Music Therapy
The aim of this unique course is to use music as a tool for emotional therapy. It is suited for hyperactive students or students who need music as a source of healing and comfort. Students will understand how different types of music produce different emotions, eg. using relaxing music as therapeutic tool for de-stress and relaxation and using uplifting and constructive music lyrics as a source of personal reflection.

Music and Technology

Digital Music Series

Music Groove Maker
Students are introduced to the exciting world of computer-based loop-based and MIDI music and will learn how to use acid pro software to create and arrange loop-based music for multimedia presentations and music productions. More advanced software such as audacity or mixpad software will also be taught to enable students to create and edit wave files in music in order to customize the sounds to their needs.

Ethnic Groove Maker
Students will learn how to create exciting loop-based music and rhythmic beats with a twist: eastern musicial instruments meets western musical instruments!

Music Producer
The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the whole process of producing music. Students will be taught a package of multiple-skills such as songwriting, lyrics writing, music arrangement, leading to an opportunity to record in a professional music studio.

Digital Disc Jockey (DJ)
Students will learn how to use DJ equipment, creating remixes and building their own signature groove and presentation skills.

Soundtrack Designer
In this course, students will understand the basics of sound designing, digital recording and its' advantages. They be taught and identify the different style of sound effect and music suited for different moods in a movie or animation. They will also learn about sound converting, sound editing, sound processing, creating special sound effects and sound designing.

Have Fun with Prodikeys
Students will learn how to play fun and creative songs, learn note reading and music creation through 'Prodikeys', a software/hardware that integrates computer keyboard buttons with the piano keyboard.

Audio Production Series

Recording Engineer
Students will be introduced to the role of the recording engineer and music producer in professional CD and album recording. They will learn the basics of sound engineering, operation of mixing boards, equalisation, compression and effects and understand the process of recording a professional CD. They will also have the opportunity to tour a professional recording studio.

Sound Engineer and Live Sound Reinforcement
Students will learn the basics of sound and sound engineering, how to operate a mixing board, equalisation and volume, effects and compressions, understanding microphones, cable connections and how to successfully support their schools' events as soundmen. 'Live' sound mixing exercises and projects will be given as practical exercises.

School Radio Programmer / Digital Radio Podcaster
Students will learn the basics of radio programming, radio scripting and producing, how to use a mixing board and digital software, digital podcasts and analog broadcast and how to produce their schools' very own radio programmes.

Fusion Series

Digital Drama Producer
In this course, students will learn to produce an audio drama or commercials using modern computer technology. They introduce the basic element about mood music designing for the drama production,acquiring skill in sound editing, designing, creating special effects and super imposing sound on audio production.

The process will be spent on helping students to build a foundation for their involvement and growing-interest in drama , developing story boarding, character building, scripting writing, oral and presentation skills.

Stomp It! Groove It!
This course integrates both software-driven loop based music with ‘live’ hand percussion instruments, creating a thrilling mix!
